The Cincinnati, OH VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for a full-time physician to be the Section Chief, Emergency Department (ED). This position will report to the Chief of Primary Care and will be 0.6 FTE administrative and 0.4 FTE clinical time. The ED Section Chief is responsible for quality performance including measures of wait time and patient flow delineated in EDIS (Emergency Department Integrated Software). Teamwork in partnering with other clinical service chiefs is essential. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Emergency Medicine Residency trained and Board Eligible/Board Certified in Emergency Medicine American Heart BLS/ACLS certification. Preferred Experience: Graduate of a 4-year residency training program in Emergency Medicine (or a 3-year program with one year of additional emergency medicine experience) and board certified/board eligible in Emergency Medicine. A broad background in emergency medicine, skill in performing clinical and procedural care including enacting ACLS, performing moderate sedation, and radiological and EKG interpretation Computer literacy Supervisory experience Two years of Emergency Department practice experience. Physical Requirements: Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. The work requires walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items like papers or books or repositioning patients. The work may require some light physical effort, but no special physical demands are required to perform the work. Travel between the VAMC and University sites will be necessary. The Medical Center is a level 1b complexity hospital that offers a wide range of specialty and subspecialty services. There are opportunities for engaging in research and educational programs in affiliation with the University of Cincinnati. The 16-bed Emergency Department has approximately 24,000 patient visits/year and is 24/7, triple-covered during the day and single-covered at night. There is management of acute stroke in collaboration with the Cincinnati Stroke Team and acute coronary syndrome management in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati. The department does not see pediatrics, OB, or trauma. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Leading the Emergency Department at the Cincinnati VAMC. Directing patient care duties. Participating in the facility Emergency Preparedness Response. Providing effective outpatient care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. Maintaining current clinical privileges and keeping licensure, and all other appropriate documents up to date. Monitoring the quality performance including measures of wait time and patient flow delineated in EDIS (Emergency Department Integrated Software). Partnering with other clinical service chiefs. Will work with utilization review and the hospitalists to effect improvements in patient flow. Responsible for the EDIS compliance in the ED and reduction of wait times. Efforts to reduce the number of patients who leave the ED without being seen and improvements in discharge planning from the ED including the RAC initiative require ongoing oversight. Monitor ED efficiency, patient care, productivity, and quality measures. Provide ED representation on CEB, Peer Review, Emergency Management, and other committees for which the ED should have dedicated representation. Support hiring, orientation, retention, appraisals, and disciplinary matters for the staff assigned to him/her. Provide team guidance in patient care in accordance with professional standards, core values and commitment to service excellence using the VA's Patient Aligned Care Team 'medical home' model.
